VS Newsletter #15| July 2020 | Open the Black Boxes! Open call in the era of Coronavirus

We are very excited to inform you that the art project Open the Black Boxes expands its journey as a global participatory digital project via its updated website and in collaboration with Vital Space –our global, interdisciplinary, cross-media art platform addressing the pressing issues of our time. Open the Black Boxes is an art project that provides free access to an ongoing open source database created by mapping people’s hopes and fears.

In the era of Coronavirus Vital Space and artist Danae Stratou reactivate the open call by inviting people from around the world to participate once more in the project, by submitting online the One Word which best reflects what threatens them the most, or what they are desperately eager to preserve.  Your input will be fundamental to the success of the project in order to help us understand our collective predicament.

We kindly invite you to Open the Black Boxes!

Participate in your own language by submitting your one word  here

In this time of multiple crises and uncertainty, marked by a global pandemic, economic depression, mass riots, police brutality, raising nationalisms and environmental disaster, we invite you to capture the pulse on the current situation.  The submitted words by people from around the world will be presented digitally as unique innovative infographics that can be filtered by age, gender and country of the participants. Gathered without intermediaries, the words will become an extremely valuable record of our time: raw materials for artists, researchers, and people from every walk of life to make sense of the present crisis and reimagine our future.

The related installation It’s Time to Open the Black Boxes! has been exhibited in major European cities since its inaugural exhibition in Athens, Greece (2012).  The project has travelled amongst others to Krems, Austria (2016), Paris, France (2017), Mallorca, Spain (2017), London, UK (2018), Ghent, Belgium (2019), with many thousands of participants submitting their words.

We are counting on receiving your word!

VS Newsletter #14 | October 2015 | ShararaTech Challenge

The Vital Space Team is pleased to bring to your attention this project ShararaTech Challenge – Water, Energy and Self-Reliance on/around the Mediterranean for which Vital Space Projects is functioning as a supporting collaborator.

http://www.sharara.tech/?q=content/call-submissions

This is a call for proposals for tech-based artworks that represent innovative water or energy solutions for self-reliance of communities in or around the Mediterranean. This call seeks installations that synthesize intriguing artistic concepts with novel designs for decentralized clean water or energy generation, distribution and storage. Submissions should demonstrate systemic thinking by factoring contextual natural, cultural, and socio-economic conditions. Ideally a submission should propose a public artwork that has captivating easy-to-understand innate narratives that can foster the courage to creatively tackle problems deemed unsolvable, and the virtues of communal self-reliance. Submissions that demonstrate the ability to make a successful intervention and a transformative impact with the potential for regional or global replicability would be more favorable. Depending on a submission’s respective stage of development from design to prototyping and fabrication and on whether it had been exhibited before, a prize ranging from $30k to $50k will be divided equally among two selected artworks: One with the best fit for the Tunisian Sahara and one for Gaza Strip. Subject to the sole discretion of the Festival’s sponsors and affiliates, other submissions for other locations on the Mediterranean that meet the approval of the jury may get funding. Selected submissions will participate in the inaugural edition of an affiliate emergent desert-camp out event in the Sahara, ShararaTech Art & Science Mediterranean Festival, tentatively scheduled to take place 1-3 October 2016 and/or 1-3 April 2017. Selected artists will be invited to publish articles in the Leonardo Journal  at MIT Press under the directorship of Roger F Malina and guest editorship of Amal Alayan. A high-caliber jury will be reviewing the submissions and making the selection. Ibtikar Venture Partners LLC and affiliates will manage the award and other potential funding of selected submissions. For Rules of ShararaTech Challenge and for further information visit ShararaTech Art & Science Mediterranean Festival website. The deadline for submission is 30 December 2015.

For details of the project as a whole see http://www.sharara.tech/

VS Newsletter #12 | September 2014 | Chosen Cells

WDW REVIEW | NEW ARTICLE BY YANIS VAROUFAKIS AND VITAL SPACE

“Chosen Cells” is a sequel to “Solitary Subversives” and Vital Space’s eighth article for Witte de With Review (an initiative of Rotterdam-based Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art).

Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art recently presented WdW Review, an online platform whose structure is organized around four dedicated sections. The first takes the form of reports from several international editorial desks; the second weaves critical and innovative essays with editorial cartoons; the third invites an author to consider a single image through a speculative piece of writing; the last section layers texts commissioned thematically to address the same time and/or place so as to collectively draw a set of discrete volumes on each context in question respectively. In this sense Athens, Beijing, Cairo, Delhi / Calcutta, Istanbul, Jerusalem, Moscow and Shanghai are chosen by WDW Review to function  as local editorial desks.

Vital Space has so far written eight articles for the WDW Review: Chosen Cells (August 2014), Solitary Subversives (June 2014), Of Masks and Shadows (March 2014), Sick Predators (January 2014), The Serpent’s Greek Lair (November 2013), No Signal (September 2013), Birthplace of our Globalizing Wall (July 2013), Of Public Phones and Besieged Humans (May 2013).

The latest article Chosen Cells written by Yanis Varoufakis focuses on civil rights, incarceration and exile at the post-war greek state and it is based on a true story. The article is accompanied by images of Maria Papanikolaou’s artworks, who is also a member of the Vital Space Team. In her work, Maria is inspired a lot by her first degree in law and her practice at the felonies’ department of Athens Supreme Court. Her installations revolve around cases of human rights violations. She uses stories she heard from prisoners and afterwards she creates sculptures, videos and photographs based on fictional jailbreak stories that you can see at her websitewww.jailbreakart.gr.

3. LEBENSWEISHEITSPIELEREI |  NEW GUEST VIDEO BY MAKIS FAROS
“LEBENSWEISHEITSPIELEREI”,  by Makis Faros, 2009.

The project is based on the poem of Wallace Stevens titled “LEBENSWEISHEITSPIELEREI”<--break->

The lyrics : “The proud and the strong Have departed” marks a huge portion of the history of the African states calling for their independency at the decades of 60 and after. People who were cut off from their land, used to be dependent on slave labor and within a culture imposed on them, had to stay stool when their invaders departed. These mechanisms can also be found at the contemporary consumer societies of the western world. The video focuses on the endless vicious game of them: those who remain, between desire and the “grandeur of annihilation”.

2. WDW REVIEW | NEW ARTICLE BY YANIS VAROUFAKIS AND VITAL SPACE

“Sick Predators” is the fifth article that Yanis Varoufakis and vitalspace.org have contributed to the Witte de With Review (an initiative of Rotterdam-based Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art).

“It was five in the morning. The early morning April breeze was cutting into Katerina’s underdressed flesh like a razor. But, with her mind clearing, a pressing hunger made her step out from her makeshift shelter. She turned the corner, on the way to the nearby corner shop in Psirri where she often spent her ‘savings’ on bread and chips. Suddenly she felt a firm hand on her shoulder and heard a voice asking: “Where do you think you are going?” It was a cop. And he was not alone…”

“The Serpent’s Greek Lair”,  In this fourth article that Yanis Varoufakis and vitalspace.org have contributed to the Witte de With Review (an initiative of Rotterdam-based Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art), we offer a short history of Golden Dawn, the Greek Nazi party. As with all our articles in WdW Review, the ‘take’ is always personal, intimate almost. In this piece on Golden Dawn, Yanis begins with an encounter with an old, poor Peloponnesean farmer, some time in the 1990s, whose life revealed much about Greece’s Dark Side.
